Turning 30
So, I turned 30 yesterday. A while ago, I looked at it with slight trepidation, I don't think I was prepared to say goodbye to my twenties just like that.

Q & A session for my short films screening at CineMalaysia Film Festival
I have just spent three nights in Tokyo to attend the CineMalaysia Film Festival シネ・マレーシア, a great film festival organized in Tokyo to show Malaysian films. This was its inaugural edition. The film festival ran from the 24th to the 31st of May. I was around for the last two days.

Discussing the short film medium
Back in January, I was on Kenneth Chaw's The Star article "Short Films starting to appeal to a bigger audience", discussing about my thoughts on short films. Filmmaker James Lee and Youtube sensation Jinnyboy were interviewed too.
Prior to that, Kenneth had actually done a very lengthy email interview with me in preparation for his article. While a number of my quotes were in the final article, I thought I would like to share our entire discussion with everyone. I'm doing it now, with Kenneth's permission. (In truth, I have wanted to do this since January, but, ah, I never had the time.)
So, here we go.
Kenneth's questions are in bold.
My answers will just be... normal text.

Interview with me on the Pia International Film Festival website
This Japanese interview with me was done last November and had been posted on the PIA International Film Festival website.
I feel bad that I am posting old news, I never liked clinging to past glories. But for the sake of preservation, and just in case I cannot find the interview anymore, at least I will have records of it here.

Directing Life - article about me on Style: Magazine (Jan 2012)
I never imagined myself ever appearing on Style: Magazine. Ever. Not in my wildest dreams. Life is pretty insane. But here's Nicole Foo Bihzhu's feature on me at Style: Magazine.
I have to thank my old secondary school classmate Jesly Hieng once again, for scanning this. I was unable to find the magazine anywhere since I got back!

4 of my short films online now thanks to Yxine Film Fest's Mini-Focus on me.
The YxineFF is an annual online short film festival that focuses mostly on Vietnamese short films, and also some South East Asian ones.
I met its founder Marcus Manh Cuong Vu at last year's Hamburg International Film Festival, when he moderated the question and answer for THE TIGER FACTORY screening (Ming Jin the director couldn't go, so I went on his behalf as the immensely cute producer). He also later did a short interview with me about Malaysian Independent Cinema and other stuff.
I'm very honoured that this year's Yxine Film Festival is doing a mini-focus on me. For a temporary amount of time, four of my previous short films are uploaded online for the viewing pleasure of audiences, all of them except INHALATION are actually loose adaptations of Yasunari Kawabata's works.

KINGYO receives Silver Horse from 19th Mediterranean Festival of New Filmmakers - Larissa
UPDATED: This is my short film Kingyo, in its entirety
Last week, just a day before I left for Tokyo, and when I was undergoing this interview with China Press (the one mentioned in the previous post) I suddenly received an email from the Mediterranean Festival of New Film-makers in Larissa, Greece, that my short film KINGYO had received the Silver Horse. (Golden Horse went to the Greek short CASUS BELLI by Yiorgos Zois).
I'm very honoured. It's been nearly two years since KINGYO (trailer) world premiered in Venice. Knowing that it is still being played before appreciative audiences is a joy, and it also validates the fact that the efforts put in by my cast and crew were totally worth it.
This morning, I finally received the trophy and certificate they sent me.

My films, LOVE SUICIDES and KINGYO receive awards at the Doi Saket International Film Festival
Now, this is a surprise!
Just received news that I won two awards at the inaugural Doi Saket International Film Festival (facebook page here). The festival actually ended on the same day as the Tokyo International Film Fest (Oct 31st), but the folks were so busy that they didn't announce the results publicly until few moments ago.
I won a Best Editing Award for KINGYO (2009).

Catch KINGYO and a sneak peek of INHALATION at Malaysian Shorts, 20th Sept
UPDATED: This is my short film Kingyo, in its entirety
A while ago, Allan Koay the journalist once asked whether I noticed that my short films looked alike.
I disagree.
Aside from having scenes of brooding young women.
Luchino Fujisaki in KINGYO
Susan Lee in INHALATION
And regularly centering around two protagonists walking around somewhere at night, chit-chatting, and reopening old wounds etc etc.
I think each and every single one of my shorts look different!

The first KINGYO screening at SKIP CITY INTERNATIONAL D-CINEMA FESTIVAL 2010
27th of July, two days ago, the first screening of KINGYO was held as part of the short film competition program in the Skip City International D-Cinema Festival 2010.
I was surprised by the amount of audiences, being a Tuesday morning and all. Mine was the last one to play, so I got to watch the other three short films, which were all really diverse in tone and genres: A fantasy black comedy, a cyberpunk samurai actioner, and a coming-of-age tale. Left the hall when KINGYO started playing, so not entirely sure of its reception.
The filmmakers and cast members were all invited onto the stage after the screening to introduce themselves and what they wanted to say about their films.

The opening of Skip City International D-Cinema Festival 2010
Went to the opening ceremony of Skip City International D-Cinema Festival 2010. My short film, KINGYO, is in competition. 10 shorts were in competition, it's supposed to be a domestic competition for Japanese shorts only, KINGYO was a Japanese short, but its director ain't a Japanese, so that makes me the token foreigner among the nominees, awesome!
I was actually late, missed all of the opening speeches from the ceremony, but I arrived just in time to be introduced on-stage. When I walked into the place, the conversation between me and the staffer was like that:

My short films, LOVE SUICIDES and KINGYO will also play at the Singapore International Film Festival tomorrow (with LADYBIRD'S TEARS)
I mentioned in my previous post that the Thai-language short film that I wrote and produced, LADYBIRD'S TEARS, will be having its world premiere at the 23rd Singapore International Film Festival tomorrow (19th of April, 2010).
Aside from that, both the shorts that I wrote and directed, LOVE SUICIDES and KINGYO will also be part of their Asian Shorts program. It's quite an honour to have 3 shorts that I was involved in being presented at the film festival.

Erna reviews KINGYO
I was just saying in my previous post that it's not everyday someone would bother to write a review of your short film.
I need to rephrase that.
It's not everyday that you have TWO people writing about two different short films of yours.
Here's an excerpt from Erna's KINGYO review.
An ex-colleague of mine was rather disdainful about Edmund, saying that he thought far too highly of himself.
He obviously didn’t get Edmund at all. He’s a funny soul, who is often misunderstood. If only they could see past the hilarious fascetiousness on his blog and see the sensitive soul with a gift and love for narrative.
