Oh! Mikey is the best thing to come out of Japanese comedy in years. Check this one:
It's SO much funnier if you've actually been to a hostess bar/kyabakura and know what they're talking about.

I think I received one of those invitations this morning.
ReplyDeleteI must look poor. I never get those invites! ;-)
ReplyDeleteBut, is funny. I can guess the sort of club they are. So much for a simple conversation!!!
Hah, I'm getting pretty into Oh! Mikey! Checked out a few episodes, they cracked me up. The Lady Tutor one, the Princess one and the one where Mikey wanted a little brother and ran off from home. Hehe.
ReplyDeleteAny of the episodes featuring Time-kun are also hilarious. The satire of Japanese society is really cutting and complicated by having the characters be LITERAL 'American mannequins'. Really, unbelievably brilliant.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly enough, I find that the English-dub episodes aren't funny at all. The entire comedic dimension is lost when the characters are no longer speaking Japanese, since most of the jokes are based on references to Japanese social routines. I think having been to Japan and speaking at least basic Japanese is probably a requisite for getting a lot of the humor here. The translation kind of kills the effect, since it's not as obvious that the characters are acting like grotesque exaggerations of Japanese 'types'.
